What does 'shearing' has to do with butterflies? What does 'rigidity' mean in mathematics and why is it important? In this talk, accessible to Bachelor and Master students with a mathematical background, we will try to answer these questions offering a glimpse of the powerful mathematical works of Marina Ratner (1938-2017) and her legacy, from the Ratner shearing property to Ratner's rigidity theorems. The talk is part of the May 12 initiatives to 'Celebrate Women in Mathematics'.
